Christmas was celebrated in the Nij settlement.

08 January 2018 | 16:00

Today, Orthodox Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ - the Christmas. The Udis, who are residents of the Nij settlement of the Gabala region, also celebrated this day in some way. The festive event was joined by the participants of the XII "Veselo" International Festival of Music and Humour held in Gabala, which made the event even more memorable. On January 7th, to delight of the Udis, who gathered at the festive ceremony organized in the "Chotari" Albanian Church, the participants of the XII "Veselo" International Festival of Music and Humour, held in Gabala, also joined the event and made it even more memorable. Speaking at the festive celebration, the leader of the Albanian-Udi religious community, the priest of the church and members of the community told about the essence of the Christmas, about the conditions created for the performance of religious rituals, attention and care rendered to them by the government. Congratulations were made on the occasion of the holiday as well. Udins noted that there is no discrimination against them in the region, and a fine example of tolerance is the thorough restoration of the Chotari Albanian church in the Nij settlement. As reported, there are three churches and two mosques in the Nij settlement. 3700 Udis reside in the Nij settlement, with the whole population of six thousand people. In general, 4000 udins live in our country, 300 of them are registered in Oguz and Baku. The number of udins living in the world is about 10 thousand. In the settlement, the Udis have been embracing their language, religion, traditions and customs for 2500 years. The Udi language is taught in the primary classes of the Nij settlement schools, and their religious rituals in the church are performed in their native language. It was noted that during the Soviet era the Udis were forbidden to celebrate their national holidays. But since the time when our country gained independence, they are celebrating their holiday every year as an ethnic people. In a word, the Nij settlement, where Muslims and Christians live in harmony, is considered a small model of tolerance. After the speeches, candles were lit in the church, prayers were read and a festive table was laid. At the event, the Head of the Gabala Region Executive Power, Mr. Sabuhi Abdullayev, congratulated the Udis on the occasion of the holy Christmas.
