A memorable chess tournament dedicated to the “Twenty-ninth anniversary of the January 20th tragedy” took place.

On January 16, 2019, the Department of Youth and Sports of the Gabala region held a memorable junior chess tournament at the Children-Youth Sports Chess School of the Gabala Region, based on the cycle plan of events dedicated to the “Twenty-ninth anniversary of the January 20th tragedy”. The purpose of the tournament is to bring once again to the public attention the facts of the tragedy of January 20th. First, the participants of the tournament honored the memory of the martyrs with a minute of silence. Then, Fakhri Soltanov, the head of the Youth and Sports Department of the region and Adalat Aliyev, director of the Children- Youth Sports Chess School of the Gabala region, speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, said that the January 20th tragedy is the bloodiest page committed against our people on the way to the independence of Azerbaijan. The participants of the competition were also informed that the unarmed sons and daughters of Azerbaijan fought bravely against the Soviet troops, did not bow down before the empire and wrote glorious pages in the heroic history of our people. Also, the purpose of the tournament was to increase sportsmanship and improve the participants of the competition, to achieve popularity of chess, as well as to determine the composition of the regional team. 54 young chess players from rural, settlement and town schools of the region demonstrated a tense game in the tournament as part of groups in a circular system in the age groups of 8-10-12-14 and 16 years. According to the results of the tournament in the respective age groups, Ismayil Osmanli, Taghi Taghiyev, Amrah Azizov, Ulvi Bashirov, Farhad Aliyev were among the boys and Seljan Rashidova, Aysun Azizli, Hagigat Taghiyeva, Hajar Karimova were among the girls in the first place. The winners, who took the I, II and III places in each age group, were awarded diplomas of the Department of Youth and Sports.
